Sridham Mayapur
Part One
Today we observed the third anniversary
of Srila Gurudeva's departure at his samadhi in Mayapur. It was a
wonderful gathering, with hundreds of devotees from all over the world
coming together to hear of Srila Gurudeva's glorious service to
Srila Prabhupada through the medium of his godbrothers' memories.
The day started with Mangal Arati at Gurudeva's samadhi, sung
beautifully by Yamaraja prabhu from China. There were many disciples
here this year: Krishna Loka devi from Italy; Nityananda and Arjuna
Krishna prabhus, Rasikendra and Padaduli from Dallas; Sarvabhauma from
Houston; Yamaraja and Candravali from China; Keshava prabhu and
Rasanandini devi, both from
Melbourne; Guna Avatara prabhu from Israel; Baladeva prabhu, who served
here in Mayapur for some time, returned for the festivities...so many
were here and I'm possibly going to miss someone out, so I'm sorry!
After Mangal Arati we went on to the temple, where Mukunda Datta prabhu
(who is visiting from Govardhana) sang Je Anila Prema Dhana...I can't
explain in words how beautiful it was to sit and hear his beautiful
voice honoring Srila Gurudeva in that way. For those of you who don't
know Mukunda Datta prabhu, he is a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, but
since he was very young when he joined, he took complete shelter of
Srila Gurudeva after Prabhupada departed, and he treats Gurudeva as his
guru, not as his godbrother. He has much affection for Gurudeva, and
that was evident in his prayers this morning. I was sitting with
Rasanandini and Aghabid prabhus just below the stage where Mukunda Datta
was singing. I looked up at him singing and watched as a tear slid
slowly down his cheek. He was singing with so much emotion and love for
Gurudeva, everyone in the temple was moved. There was possibly over a
thousand devotees singing along during the prayers. It is a very moving
tribute that to Srila Gurudeva that is observed annually right after
Tulasi prayers, at the time he left his body.
We met at 10.30am at Gurudeva's samadhi for the ceremonies. This years
proceedings were a little different. The ceremonies fell in the middle
of a Srila Prabhupada Maha-Family Reunion here in Mayapur, so the
theme of Gurudeva's ceremonies today was his service to Srila
Prabhupada. His godbrothers were the only ones to speak, and they all
recalled their time with Gurudeva and how it related to his service to
Srila Prabhupada. Hari Sauri prabhu was MC, and called the first
speaker, Sivarama Maharaja. He recalled a time not long before Gurudeva
left when they had discussed tirobhava ceremonies, specifically Srila
Prabhupada's, and how the disappearance functions have a certain mood
that prevent one from revealing one's innermost thoughts. He said that
although Srila Prabhupada emphasized the preeminence of vani over vapu,
from this manifest plane we find it difficult to appreciate that, and
conclude that it doesn't replace the person. Maharaja recalled that his
association with Srila Gurudeva began in 1977/78, when Gurudeva became
GBC in Maharaja's zone. Maharaja didn't really agree to that
appointment, but he said to Gurudeva that they'd do a trade off: "You
can be GBC on the condition that what you learned from Srila Prabhupada
you teach to me." Maharaja said that Gurudeva "was my closest ongoing
link to Srila Prabhupada. He was uncanny in his intelligence, and Srila
Prabhupada said that he was like Lord Brahma in that way." Maharaja said
Gurudeva "knew what Srila Prabhupada wanted in terms of behavior,
service, and lila, and had a comprehensive understanding of what it
meant to follow Srila Prabhupada."
Maharaja concluded by saying, "I experience separation from him more
than I do from Srila Prabhupada. He's the person who taught me more
about Srila Prabhupada than anyone. Yet when I feel separation from
Tamal Krishna Goswami, my separation from Srila Prabhupada is enhanced."
Then HH Bhakti Caru Maharaja spoke of his association and service with
Gurudeva. He said he recalled that Srila Prabhupada would call Gurudeva
up to talk with him, and they would sit on the bed together, speaking
very intimately. He said, "You could see the confidence Srila Prabhupada
had in him, and Tamal Krishna Goswami returned that confidence by
proving his sincerity to Srila Prabhupada." He said Gurudeva was a true
leader, and would take care of everything. "He used to arrange
everything, and Upendra and I would just execute it. He took care of us
in the most wonderful way. There were times we had conflict. It wasn't
always easy." He recalled, "Once Tamal Krishna Goswami chastised me.
Those who knew him knew what his chastisement meant! If something could
be heavier than a thunderbolt, it was Tamal Krishna Goswami's
chastisement! When he chastised me, we were next to Srila Prabhupada's
room. So afterwards I went into Srila Prabhupada's room, and he said to
me, 'Don't worry. Some things you have to tolerate. Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu is asking us to become more tolerant than a tree, and
more humble than a blade of grass.' So I realized Srila Prabhupada had
heard my chastisement."
Maharaja continued with a surprise revelation: "Another time, Tamal
Krishna Goswami cursed me that I would get married." This was met with
laughter from the assembled devotees. "I was a brahmacari then, so it
wasn't so bad; I wasn't a sannyasi! But our goal then was to remain
brahmacari, so I was a bit disturbed. I went to tell Srila Prabhupada,
and Srila Prabhupada said to me, 'Go and tell Tamal Krishna that you are
already married---you are married to Krishna!'"
Maharaja spoke of Gurudeva's qualities: "He was the most wonderful
leader that we had in our Society. All of a sudden when he left it was
very different. I honestly admit today that when I got the news I
seriously considered leaving. Because it was like we were a team, and
the team is playing, and suddenly the captain is removed, and we
thought, 'What's the use of carrying on?' And I asked myself, 'Why did
Krishna take him when the
Society needed him so much? He was so ready to come back. We needed him.
ISKCON was entering a different phase. We'd been through so much, things
were picking up. We needed him the most."
Then Jayadvaita Maharaja spoke of the time when Srila Prabhupada left
this world. "I was like a child, and Tamal Krishna Goswami was the grown
up. He was in 'take-charge' mode, yet he was extremely compliant to
Srila Prabhupada. Whatever Srila Prabhupada ordered, whatever Srila
Prabhupada desired, Tamal Krishna Goswami satisfied that. He wanted
Srila Prabhupada to stay with us. But if Srila Prabhupada wanted to
leave, Tamal Krishna was going to help him." Maharaja said that Srila
Prabhupada had a lot of men to agree with him, but none to actually
challenge him if they didn't agree.
Srila Prabhupada appreciated that so much. He said, "The only person
heavier than Tamal Krishna Goswami was his spiritual master, Srila
Prabhupada! We could argue with Tamal Krishna Goswami, we could disagree
with Tamal Krishna Goswami, but we couldn't BEAT Tamal Krishna Goswami!
But Srila Prabhupada could--he had a bigger stick!" Maharaja continued:
"But he wanted that also.
Tamal Krishna Goswami's desire in life was to be directed. And he was a
director par-excellence. A great manager, and dictator. But still his
greatest qualification was how much he wanted to be directed. He placed
himself under the greatest director, Srila Prabhupada, and made himself
malleable to his order."
Then Lokanath Swami came up to speak and had everyone laughing straight
away with his memories of Srila Prabhupada. "Tamal Krishna Goswami was
my first GBC. He was a heavy GBC! One morning in Bombay, I was late for
Mangal Arati, so I put my dhoti on lungi-style (wrapped around like a
sannyasi, not pleated). I went to the temple, and I offered my
obeisances. As I began to get up, I saw someone standing right next to
me: Tamal Krishna Goswami. He was right next to me, and as I looked up
he said, 'Go back.'
That was the first and last time I wore my dhoti lungi-style, until I
took sannyasa!" Maharaja continued in a humorous vein: "Then my marriage
was arranged by the temple president, but the parents came and kidnapped
the girl! I was thinking then, 'Why do bad things happen to good people
like me?' So I had this heartbreaking experience. And I went to TKG and
had a dialog. And like Srila Prabhupada had said to Bhakti Caru Maharaja
some years later, this was 1973 and TKG said it to me first, he said,
'You marry Krishna.' And eventually I did."
Hari Sauri then recalled a time when he went with Srila Prabhupada to
visit Srila Sridhara Maharaja at his math in Navadvip. While Srila
Prabhupada was talking to someone, Sridhara Maharaja came and spoke to
Hari Sauri. He asked, "Where is Tamal?" and Hari Sauri told Maharaja
that he was in the west preaching. Sridhara Maharaja then said to Hari
Sauri, "Yes, he is a great preacher. Your Guru Maharaja once told me,
'Of all my disciples, he knows the philosophy.'"
After this, Radhanath Swami spoke, followed by Jayapataka Swami, then
Kavicandra Maharaja, and finally Madhudvisa Prabhu.

We had a small but sweet gathering in
Perth, Australia. It was held in the house of Vrajanandana and Radhika
Sundari. This very devoted couple had wanted to take initiation from
Gurudeva. However he passed on before they could. They have since taken
initiation from Giridhari Swami because of his strong links to Srila
Gurudeva.
At the ceremony we first had a very melodious kirtan led first by
Bh.Emmanuel Prabhu and then by Bh.Jason. Everyone present then spoke in
turn about Srila Gurudeva-his defining and wonderful qualities, and
pastimes. It was so nice to hear the glorification of Srila Gurudeva and
everyone's personal realisations. One quality that really stood out was
his devotion to Srila Prabhupada. He would do anything to carry out
Srila Prabhupada's pure desires.
Then we had Pushpanjali, another nice kirtan and a
wonderful feast. The devotion of Radhika Sundari
towards Srila Gurudeva was easy to see as preparation after preparation
was brought out. It took her three days to prepare everything!
I would like to thank Vrajanandana Prabhu and Radhika Sundari again for
hosting the program and
enabling us to come together to associate with Srila Gurudeva more
fully, on this auspicious day.

My good husband and I
had such a strong desire to come to Mayapur - but at this time it was
not possible, as Tamal Krishna's Veggie Garden is by Gurudeva's mercy
growing and expanding, and this was not the time to leave. We just
opened on Saturday night with a new Garden patio, filled with fragrant
jasmine and it was truly divine. We have not advertised this yet - but
still many people came!
Here in Puerto we are the only disciples of Srila Gurudeva. You are all
very fortunate to be able to be together with all of our Godbrothers
and Godsisters, know this for certain.
Yesterday, the day began at Mangal arotik. We brought a beautiful
picture of Gurudeva and offered garlands and I sat chanting my
japa before him, I was told that the pujari for Sri Radha
Syamasundar was ill, so as Gurudeva arranged I was asked to dress
Them. I offered Govinda arotik and after lead the kirtan to Srila
Prabhupada & Srila Gurudeva. It was very sweet.
Then, down the mountain road, off to TK's Veggie Garden and it was a
busy day! Back to the temple in the afternoon to cook. We had
announced at our Sunday program that we were cooking the evening
offering and feast to honor our beloved Gurudeva, and show a video.
The temple was filled with many devotees who came, to honor him. Our
son Keshava sang Je Anilo Prema Dhana and then the Sri Gurv-astaka
prayers in a moving evening meter. We all shared our personal
offerings and memories of Gurudeva, as did other devotees. Our son
Keshava das spoke in Spanish, from his heart with tears. We then
offered more garlands and Pushpanjali Devotees of other Gurus
also came into the kitchen and cooked offering for Srila Gurudeva and
we had a wonderful feast. During the feast we showed a video of Srila
Gurudeva's one recorded on his final Vyasa Puja day in Dallas -
where he spoke about the importance of loving relationships with
the devotees. My husband Kartikeya translated the class into Spanish.
This proved to be a very healing experience for all present, whose
hearts had been wounded and hardened by the unfortunate
experiences they had to live through with the past
administration. Gurudeva's words were the perfect healing
touch....

Bhaja Govinda Prabhu
Yesterday (12-03-05) we had
wonderful Srila Gurudeva disappearance program here in Sydney
Australia. It was held at Krishna Vijaya Prabhu and Mother Nava Kishori
dd our godbrother/sister.
Just for your information who don't know, Krishna Vijaya prabhu (Dr
Marolia) and his good wife are
very dedicated disciples of Srila Gurudeva. Before Srila Gurudeva
departed they were building a very beautiful temple at his home upstairs
and also a room for Srila Gurudeva during his visit to Sydney. When they
were nearly half way of completion Srila Gurudeva left the world. So
they still continued this service and now they serve other
visiting sannyasis such HH Bir Krishna Goswami Maharaja at there place
and holds most of Krishna Consciousness functions and programmes at
there
place. There is big deities of Sri Sri Radha Gopinath and he does
worships Them daily.
The disappearance programme started at 6.30pm.It started with vaisanava
bhajans and then 7.00pm Sandhya arati.7.30 the devotees started to read
there offering. First speaker was Govardhana prabhu. He spoke lot
of Srila Gurudeva qualities and his pastimes. Govardhana
prabhu is very senior disciple of Srila Gurudeva. He serve Srila
Gurudeva for many years in Fiji and
then in Australia.
Then Rupa Ragunatha prabhu spoke about Srila Gurudeva preaching efforts.
Then Bhaja Govinda prabhu spoke how Srila Gurudeva use to be so heavy
and sweet also. Then Sundara Gopal prabhu (from South Africa) spoke how
he desired for years to see Srila Gurudeva when he was in South Africa
and after 15 years later during his last trip in Australia he was
fortunate enough to associate with him.
Then Mataji spoke for a while. Since we had a very strict timetable then
the programme moved on.
At 8.30 pm we had puspapanjali followed by Guru puja. We had wonderful
kirtan and dance and every one were really fired up. Since this is Srila
Gurudeva most favoured after all the programmes. So every one took part
in it. Then after Prema Dhana every one was requested to turn around to
watch 2 movies of Srila Gurudeva. First one was in Hungray,2001 when
Srila Gurudeva was there for Janmastami there. They had a 5 sannyasi
then and had fired up kirtan. When Srila Gurudeva started dancing every
one in the crowd said Jaya Srila Gurudeva or Srila Gurudeva ki
Jaya..While the kirtan was going in the movie every devotees started
chanting together in the crowd. Then second movie was Srila Gurudeva in
Sydney temple lecturing, chanting and dancing. 9.30 was prasadam time.
we had about 70 devotees who attended the programme. Some of them
never knew who Srila Gurudeva was. They really admire Srila Gurudeva in
many ways.
Every body enjoyed the programme and finally we finished at 10.30pm..

Part Two
Nand Kishor prabhu, the Temple President
from Mira Road in Bombay, spoke next. Although there were only
godbrothers speaking and glorifying Srila Gurudeva's service to
Srila Prabhupada, Nand Kishor had a special reason for wanting
to speak: he had just received word from the Municipal Council in
Bombay that a crossroad on Mira Road was to be called "Tamal Krishna
Goswami Chowk." The announcement was met with loud applause and
cheering from the audience! Nand Kishor then recalled a pastime in
London that he'd had with Gurudeva. "He came to the Manor, this was
around 1984. I was to pick him up at the airport. So due to traffic
and so on, I arrived a little late, and as I approached the airport
pickup, there was Tamal Krishna Goswami climbing into a London taxi.
I was beeping my horn and waving but he didn't see me. Or maybe he
did! Anyway, I followed the taxi, trying to get his attention, but
he was sitting in the back just looking straight ahead. I followed
that taxi all the way to the Manor, along the motorway. That's a
long trip for those of you who don't know. A long trip. In 1984 it
cost 80 British pounds for that trip. When we arrived at the Manor,
I pulled up behind the taxi, and Tamal Krishna Goswami was just
getting out. I rushed up to the door but he just walked straight
past me and said, 'Pay the driver!' and kept walking." I believe
Nand Kishor prabhu received the loudest and longest laugh of the day
with that tale. It was the straightforward and absolute mood of
Gurudeva's that everyone there---his godbrothers and disciples
alike---were completely familiar with. We all owe Nand Kishor our
thanks for his latest service, but he is also due some thanks that
date back to this time at the Manor. Srila Gurudeva asked him to
fund the printing of "Servant of the Servant," and he did. There are
thousands of devotees worldwide who appreciate that book very much,
and so Nand Kishor was an honored guest today at the functions. He
spoke about how he was aspiring for initiation from Gurudeva, but
after some heavy exchanges he realized, "I can't takethis any more!"
and took shelter of HH Bhakti Caru Swami. The first time he met with
Gurudeva after his initiation (in 1992) he was thinking, "Oh no,
what will he say? He'll be so angry with me." But Gurudeva was very
kind, and pleased with Nand Kishor. He said to him, "You might have
escaped me,
but you will never escape Bhakti Caru Maharaja!"
HH Radhanath Swami then spoke of Srila Gurudeva's service, and his
own association with him. He spoke of Gurudeva's exceptional
preaching abilities: "Directly or indirectly, he brought hundreds of
conditioned souls from all over the world to become Srila
Prabhupada's initiated disciples." Maharaja recalled a time a few
years ago when Sridhara Maharaja (who was living in Bombay) was on
the verge of death. "Tamal Krishna Goswami was a long way away, but
immediately he flew in. He was invited to give class in Juhu, and in
Chowpatty, and in Mira Road. But when I spoke to him, he said, 'I am
coming for one exclusive purpose---to be with my dear godbrother
Sridhara Maharaja and NOTHING else.' Day and night he sat and read
to Sridhara Maharaja from Srila Prabhupada's books. Sridhara
Maharaja said later that Tamal Krishna Goswami's visit was 'the
greatest honor and highlight of my entire life.' He made that
offering, that gesture, to show his love for his godbrother."
Maharaja said, "Tamal Krishna Goswami had a spontaneous empowerment
to understand with Srila Prabhupada wanted, and to do it, and to
lead it."
Maharaja then related how Srila Gurudeva would so swiftly respond to
Srila Prabhupada's desires in any capacity. "When Srila Prabhupada
emphasized sankirtan, Tamal Krishna Goswami organized a sankirtan
party to go out on the street to chant. Srila Prabhupada was so
pleased that he asked Goswami Maharaja to do it all over the
country.
"When Srila Prabhupada emphasized distribution of BTG, Tamal Krishna
Goswami took distribution beyond what anyone could comprehend." Hari
Sauri spoke up and recalled how Srila Prabhupada's initial Dai
Nippon order, which was a huge amount, was only given the go-ahead
because Tamal Krishna Goswami agreed to distribute a certain quote
monthly.
Maharaja continued: "When Srila Prabhupada shifted his emphasis to
Krishna consciousness in Europe, Tamal Krishna Goswami opened up
Germany and London.
"When Srila Prabhupada returned to India, he called Tamal Krishna
Goswami to be GBC and lead the projects there. "When Srila
Prabhupada wanted Mayapur developed, Tamal Krishna Goswami got the
land, an impossible feat at the time. He returned to Srila
Prabhupada and said, 'Srila Prabhupada, the land in Mayapur is
yours,' and handed him the deed.
"When Srila Prabhupada was in Bombay...how Srila Prabhupada fought
for that Juhu land! And Tamal Krishna Goswami was in the heart of
it.
"When Srila Prabhupada emphasized big
books, Tamal Krishna Goswami returned to the US and established the
Radha Damodar Traveling Sankirtan Party (RDTSKP) and
revolutionized devotee-making and book distribution all over the
world.
"This list goes beyond my capacity to comprehend. Srila Prabhupada
entrusted his Guru Maharaja's projects to Tamal Krishna Goswami.
Srila Prabhupada could depend on Tamal Krishna Goswami's complete
surrender; buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana 'Those who are on this path
are resolute in
purpose, and their aim is one.' He had an intense aim. It is
difficult to be around people like that. But Srila Prabhupada loved
him dearly. His life is an offering of profound love to his
spiritual master. He was, to ISKCON, a loyal and faithful servant.
He understood what ISKCON meant to Srila Prabhupada."
Maharaja recalled one humorous pastime that took place 2 or 3 days
before Srila Gurudeva left in 2002. "We were standing in the Ganga,
he was performing last rites for one disciple of his. The two of us
were alone, the other devotees were some distance away, and so I
asked him a question that had been in my mind since 1973. I said,
"Goswami Maharaja, remember when the RDTSKP came to New Vrindavan in
'73? You called me in and spoke to me for one and a half hours.
Afterwards I learned you did the same with every brahmacari on New
Vrindavan. You preached to them to leave New Vrindavan and join the
RDTSKP. You would tell them 'this is no place for brahmacaris!' So
Goswami Maharaja, for thirty years this question has been in my
heart: Why didn't you ask me! He said to me, 'I didn't ask you
because I knew you wouldn't leave. I only asked the ones I knew I
could convince to leave!"
HH Jayapataka Maharaja then spoke. As he sat down, he looked behind
him at Srila Gurudeva's samadhi, then looked back at the audience
with a worried look. He said, "I don't want to put my back to him.
I'm not sure he'd like that." He shifted a little to the side so his
back wasn't turned to the samadhi. He smiled and said, "You have to
be careful with TKG!" and everyone laughed.
Maharaja recounted how he met Gurudeva first in 1968, but never
spoke to him. Then in 1971, Maharaja was the TP in Calcutta, and
Gurudeva was the GBC. "It was a new concept, this GBC. And Tamal
Krishna Goswami practiced everything on me! He was never satisfied.
Ten times he removed me as temple president, and Srila Prabhupada
would put me back." These accounts brought much laughter from the
devotees. Maharaja recalled how Gurudeva decided he needed an office
in the Calcutta temple. "So he built this blue room in the corner of
the temple. Srila Prabhupada came and saw it and said, 'We have a
beautiful English verandah, why did you now build this ugly room?'
He had it torn down!"
Maharaja then talked about their service together in Mayapur. "I got
transferred to Mayapur to help build the Lotus Building. Tamal
Krishna Goswami was like my elder brother. That was the
relationship. When we were purchasing materials for building, we
purchased 3 truckloads of steel, then we rode on the trucks back to
the land to ensure it wasn't stolen. That's the kind of thing he'd
do. He was very surrendered. He did whatever it took to do what
Srila Prabhupada said.
"In Mayapur we had 35 rupees a week between 7 devotees. Things were
a bit tight! That wasn't anything to do with Maharaja; that was
Gargamuni in
Calcutta. I proposed growing our own food, and Tamal Krishna Goswami
said, 'They're foreigners, how can they do that here?' But Srila
Prabhupada said to try. Afterwards Tamal Krishna Goswami moved to
the US to establish the RDTSKP, and we didn't see him much, but we
were a real team, through thick and thin. I used to have a
photographic memory and thought I'd always remember. There are so
many things I wish I'd noted down."
Maharaja recalled one humorous memory: "We had an idea to do full
Caturmasya in Mayapur. There was nothing much else going on, there
wasn't much in the way of preaching. So we had that idea. Srila
Prabhupada agreed, he said it would be purifying. The whole thing:
eating off the ground, beards, etc. So during Kartika we went to
visit Srila Prabhupada in Vrindavan. Tamal Krishna Goswami was
secretary then, and he came and said, 'Srila Prabhupada said you
should all take prasad.' I never knew whether Srila Prabhupada
really said that, or whether Tamal Krishna Goswami wanted us to
break our fast!"
Maharaja went on to speak about the third class devotee, the second
class devotee, and the first class devotee, who knows what the
spiritual master wants before he asks for it. "He had some kind of
mystic power to know what Srila Prabhupada wanted."
Maharaja concluded: "I never expected to be commenting on his
disappearance festival. I certainly never expected to perform the
final rites ceremony, taking his body down into samadhi. I thought
he'd live for so long." Maharaja paused for a few moments.
"The whole RDTSKP fall out, at that GBC meeting here in Mayapur.
There was a big revolt from the devotees. That's how it was then: if
the GBC decided something, it was announced during the festival and
the devotees had the chance to revolt. I think the GBC forgets that
now :) But that whole thing, when he was sent to China. He accepted.
He went. He had that kind of dedication. I remember his tenderness.
And his strictness. He would tell me if I wasn't rightly situated,
but in a sincere way."
Maharaja then looked down at his lap, and was obviously very
emotional. "He could tolerate me. None of my other godbrothers can
tolerate me. I miss him very much. People say of Tamal Krishna
Goswami that he was a Prabhupada man. They say that of many people,
but he was the senior-most Prabhupada man, to the very end. When you
remember Srila Prabhupada, you remember TKG."
Then His Holiness Kavicandra Maharaja came and spoke. This is the
first time, he said, that he had had an opportunity to glorify
Gurudeva in public. He spoke of the RDTSKP, and how amazing it was
to be involved in that. "They made 17 devotees in a month." Then
after Srila Prabhupada left, he said, "Tamal Krishna Goswami made me
his servant. But he was never satisfied! If I sat down he'd say,
'You are so lazy, look at you sitting around,' and if I walked or
moved he'd say, 'You are so restless, can't you sit still for a
moment?' He was so heavy, but he said to someone once, 'Kavi knows I
gotta take it out on someone!' He made me very determined to never
quit. He could be sweet but I mostly didn't get that!"
Maharaja then gave a further insight into Gurudeva's service to
Srila Prabhupada: "On the RDTSKP, he would get up before everyone
and chant, then he'd get on the phone and talk to every boy on the
party. That was 140 men at that stage. He'd go out in the snow and
stand in a phone booth for 3 or 4 hours every morning, talking to
each member of the party." Maharaja said he would encourage them
all, asking them their scores, asking if they were chanting and
reading, asking them to surrender more to Srila Prabhupada. "He was
so kind."
The final speaker was Madhudvisa Prabhu, and he spoke so fondly of
Gurudeva. "I'm going to call him Tamal, because that's what I always
called him. So I first saw Tamal on Haight Street in 1968. He was
selling flutes for a living, which was a very noble livelihood. He
looked like an angel, with his long dark curly hair, playing this
flute. Then he moved to the Morning Star commune in the north of San
Francisco. He moved there because he said he wanted to study the
Bible. Being from a Jewish background, he'd never had the
opportunity to study the Bible. So that's what he did. Then one day,
he was living there in his tree, he heard a drum beat playing. He
answered itwith the flute. Then the drum answered back, so he
answered again with the flute. They moved towards each other, these
two sounds, until there they were, standing face to face for the
first time: Visnujana and Tamal.
"Tamal was trained in classical silver flute, he'd studied in New
York, and Visnujana was trying to form a band. He took Tamal back to
his apartment in
San Francisco, told him he had a record he wanted him to hear. It
was Prabhupada chanting Hare Krishna, and they danced around to the
chanting in Visnujana's apartment. Two grown men! Well, they were
young boys then, I guess. They played the record to the end and then
turned it over and started
again. They danced for hours to Srila Prabhupada's chanting."
Madhudvisa then started chanting the tune they had danced to, and
everyone joined in.
He continued: "Many have seen the tough side of Tamal, but beyond
that was great, true compassion. The best example of that compassion
was Bhavananda.
It was La Cienega Boulevard, before we bought the LA temple we have
now. And Bhavananda arrived one Sunday feast with his entourage.
They were actors, artists, musicians, and they were calling to him,
'Oh, Charlie, look at this...Oh Charlie, look at that!'They were the
Charlie boys." Madhudvisa prabhu is a polished story-teller, and had
the audience hooked on this story. I was taking notes, not
recording, and it is difficult to describe in print how he was
relating the atmosphere and environment. He was explaining how
Bhavananda was a big personality, this whole entourage just followed
him around and went everywhere with him. He continued with the
story: "And meanwhile, Bhavananda is sitting in the corner with
Tamal, and Tamal is preaching to him. And all the entourage, they
come over and say it's time to leave, and Bhavananda says, 'I'm
staying,' and Tamal is sitting next to him, and the Charlie boys,
they're saying, 'But Charlie, what about this thing next week you
have to attend, and what about that, and what about...' and he says,
'I'm staying,' and Tamal is sitting there nodding and smiling. Then
a couple of weeks later, the Charlie boys come back, and there's
some premiere somewhere and they want to take Bhavananda, and he
wasn't so familiar with all the rules and regs, and he thought,
'I'll take the afternoon off.'"
(everyone in the audience laughed.) "And so he didn't come back. He
blooped! But Tamal, he found out where he was living, and he went
there...into the 'feathered nest!' And he sat there all night, and
he preached to Bhavananda. And he got him to return." Madhudvisa
shouted, "He brought him back!!" This was met with applause and loud
calls of "Jaya!" and "Haribol!" from the audience. Madhudvisa said,
"THAT is compassion. True compassion."
He then went on: "Tamal was the Temple President. In those days
Sudhama das (at that time brahmacari) ironed all the dhotis so that
everyone would have a neatly pressed dhoti in the morning. And
Visnujana would sing everyone to sleep with bhajans. What temple
president arranges this these days?!"
In conclusion, Madhudvisa spoke beautifully of his connection with
Srila Gurudeva: "He will always be in my spiritual vision. At my
first yajna, he was there across the fire taking second initiation.
One year later, I was taking second, and across the fire there was
Tamal, sitting next to Srila Prabhupada. Then later I took sannyasa,
and across the fire was Tamal and Srila Prabhupada. Then in Jaipur,
Tamal took sannyasa, and I was there, and across the fire was Tamal
and Srila Prabhupada. Then when Srila Prabhupada called me back to
Vrindavan..." Madhudvisa prabhu stopped speaking; his voice faltered
and he began to cry. He found it difficult to go on, and concluded
with three words: "Tamal was there."
The proceedings continued with Niranjana Swami leading guru puja and
kirtan after the pushpanjali.
Afterward everyone honored a special feast that was sponsored by our
dear godsister, Prema Mayi devi from Stockholm. Prema Mayi is always
supporting Gurudeva's samadhi and sponsors feasts in Vrindavan and
Mayapur. In the temple in the morning she received the blessings of
the all the assembled devotees for her generosity, and they chanted
one mala of Hare Krishna in her honor.
Apologies were received from Kesava Bharati Goswami, who is here in
Mayapur but who is suffering an infection and a high fever; from
Giriraj Swami who regretted his inability to attend; and from
Gurudeva's brother Bhakta Carl. All wrote that they were "present in
spirit."

Bhaktivedanta Manor, UK
Jagannathesvari Mataji
Srila Gurudeva's Disappearance Day is printed on the
British vaisnava calendar, which goes out to thousands of people. The
invitation to the program at Bhaktivedanta Manor was sent out to
hundreds of devotees this year, together with the Gaura Purnima
invitation. The program began with morning class given by my husband (Visvambhara
prabhu). First he glorified Jagannath Babaji Maharaj, who was known as
the General of the Vaisnavas, describing his personality and activities,
and then he glorified Srila Gurudeva, as the General of ISKCON, also
describing his special position and service in Srila Prabhupada's
mission. He ended with some comical pastimes, which were appreciated by
all.
The program continued in the prasadam hall, where a big picture of Srila
Gurudeva was installed and decorated with flowers and garlands. The
program was attended by godbrothers/sisters, disciples, and other
devotees whose lives had been touched by Srila Gurudeva. They spoke from
their hearts and their tears mingled together in a stream of love.
Although the program was open to everyone, the mood was very sweet and
intimate. The talks continued throughout the morning, and then a feast
was offered to Srila Gurudeva, followed by offerings of flowers,
gurupuja, and kirtana. Finally a big sumptuous feast was served to all
the devotees and guests of Bhaktivedanta Manor. It was a healing and
bonding experience, presided over by Srila Gurudeva himself. He reasons
ill who says that vaisnavas die...
Alachua, Florida
Nrtya Kisori Mataji
Here, in Alachua, we also had a ceremony, attended by
about 30 devotees, some disciples and some Godbrothers and -sister and
friends of Srila Gurudeva.
The program was held in the house of our Godbrother and -sister, Radha
Gopinatha Prabhu and his wife Tapasvini Prabhvi.
We began with a very sweet, though intense kirtana, led by H.G. Laxmi-Nrsimha
Prabhu (ACBSP).
We then shared some memories and pastimes.
H.G. Mahatma Prabhu (ACBSP) spoke first, and shared his personal
exchanges with Srila Gurudeva, in which Srila Gurudeva repeatedly
extended himself to him and his wife, Jahnava, and showed much love,
care and concern. He shared Srila Gurudeva's extraordinary loving
dealings with many people, and how he would always have the time for
everybody and always be giving himself to
others.
He also spoke about the many different aspects of Srila Gurudeva's
personality and, especially, about the very soft one which he exhibited
unlimitedly in his final years here...
Mahatama Prabhu also narrated some exchanges they had after Mother
Kirtida's departure, when Srila Gurudeva expressed himself very
intimately and with much vulnerability.
Then Laxmi-Nrsimha Prabhu spoke in length, mainly sharing wonderful
stories from their days together on the Radha-Damodara Sankirtana Party.
He brought us to both laughter and tears...
[I tried to record it all, but failed due to inadequate equipment. So,
please forgive me for not being able to share in much detail here.]
Other sharings were by Mother Pasupati (ACBSP); Kalakantha Prabhu (ACBSP),
who has many "old" memories from Srila Gurudeva, but also some from the
last nights in Sridhama Mayapura, where Srila Gurudeva insisted to
include him in the bhajanas in his room; Sesa Prabhu (ACBSP) shared the
first encounter with Srila Gurudeva when he was looking for recruits for
the Radha-Damodara Party...; Mother Rucira (ACBSP) shared some intense
"cooking pastimes"; our Godsister Hladini Sakti spoke about Srila
Gurudeva's vision of her future as a judge (she graduated from Law
school at the same time when Srila Gurudeva graduated from SMU); our
Godbrother Radha-Jivan Prabhu, shared his realizations about Srila
Gurudeva's disappearance and how his apparent "controlling tendency" was
coming out of great care. He also told us how Srila Gurudeva
contemplated to kidnap him from Alachua...
[This is in general what I remember...]
Many more wanted to speak, but the time was running short (or late...)
We then had Puspanjali, Bhoga offering and Arati as Adi Karta Prabhu (ACBSP)
led a most wonderful bhajan.
At last Prasadam Feast (which was jointly prepared by all the disciples)
was served for the great pleasure and satisfaction of all.
Srila Gurudeva ki jaya!!!

Sarvakanti Mataji’s love
for Srila Gurudeva manifests in her daily service, yet on these
especially festive days, her glories beam forth for all to behold!
She conceded that
because of my work schedule, all I had to do was to pitch up at her
mother’s place early in the morning, and assist her. So, I did just
that.
Sarvakanti Mataji’s
mother lives in Phoenix, 80 km away from where I live. On the way, I
was, admittedly, feeling very down and out. I picked up my friend
Rajiv, who also lives in Phoenix, and then went to Sarva’s. It didn’t
take long though, for the sheer momentum of everything to wipe away all
my doldrums. She had us “assisting” with chopping vegetables, and
scrubbing the pots… but honestly, we were more in her way. Still, she
tolerated us, and by noon, we somehow packed all this in my car, and
left for Sarva’s sister, Pravina Mataji’s place in Cato Manor, 35km
away.
Even though Sarvakanti
Mataji and I are the only disciples of His Divine Grace Srila Tamal
Krishna Goswami Gurudeva, here in South Africa… somehow Srila Gurudeva’s
Vyasa Puja is always a big festival here. I had been arranging the
Vyasa Puja celebrations in Pretoria, and Sarvakanti had been doing them
in Durban. For the Tirobhava ceremony over the past 2 years, we felt
that we’d rather just be with each other. So again, this year… we
decided to keep it as a very small, intimate function.
Or so I thought.
Arriving at Pravina
Mataji’s place, we unpacked everything, and found Sarva’s family members
there – all of whom have received so much of love and affection from
Srila Gurudeva, even though none have met His Divine Grace personally.
Then Rajiv and I were introduced to all their guests – about 20 of
them.
I read out Srila
Gurudeva’s Vyasa Puja offering from the 2002 VP book, and spoke to the
guests a little. It was more formal than I had hoped for, but they were
new, and needed a few explanations. That it appears we’re worshipping a
man here, our Guru, instead of Krishna, God… yet the bona fide Spiritual
Master is our access to God, and is His authorised representative.
Pravina Mataji spoke
next. Her words full of emotion… her expressions leaving no doubt how
much Srila Gurudeva has touched her life.
I realised how much I
needed to be with her. She was saying things I was feeling, and she
stirred up emotions I have been running away from since that March 15th.
Sarvakanti Mataji’s
younger sister, Vidhia Mataji was next to address us. Sarvakanti was
sending a gift for Srila Gurudeva, and asked her sister to do so too.
Somehow, she agreed… and to her amazement, not long afterwards, she got
a letter from Srila Gurudeva. And what a letter it was!
She openly admitted: it
was the kindest, most loving letter she had ever received. Then, she
was stuck. She knew she had to, out of proper etiquette, at least write
to Srila Gurudeva and thank him for such a letter. Yet, she hesitated
to do so. If she did, then she would be trapped in a relationship with
him. With her other commitments, she did not feel prepared for such a
leap. In any case, she explained her situation to Srila Gurudeva, and
Srila Gurudeva loved her for it. She said that Srila Gurudeva told her
that they were his disciples already, and when they all meet, he would
formally initiate them.
Vidhia Mataji’s
daughter, Shivani, then read out a letter she had received from Srila
Gurudeva, in which he said that he would accept her as his disciple
too! When she had finished, she announced that it is also her birthday,
and she is grateful for all the concern Srila Gurudeva had shown her.
Sarvakanti Mataji spoke
from her heart, as usual. She read out a letter Srila Gurudeva sent
her, giving her instructions on how to serve him. She now takes those
instructions very seriously. She has joined a college, and is studying
media management. She plans on making Krishna Conscious DVDs for
children.
I was asked to speak
again. I spoke of what I had just heard Srila Gurudeva say in a lecture
while driving there. Srila Gurudeva was in Vrindaban, and asked
disciples of various Gurus to ask for one benediction from their
respective Spiritual Masters. They said: To serve the mission of the
Spiritual Master; To love the Guru; To have full faith in the Guru;
To realize what the Guru wants of them, and serve him accordingly. Then
Srila Gurudeva asked, what one blessing could sum-up all these things.
One devotee offered: to not commit offenses to the devotees. Srila
Gurudeva said, Yes… but there is one thing he was thinking of, that if
asked… he would have asked for. He said, he would have asked to be
blessed that he always remains in ISKCON. Because only if we are in
ISKCON can any of these other things be possible.
And so, on Srila
Gurudeva’s Tirobhava day, I asked to be blessed that I too, always be a
member of ISKCON.
While these talks were
going on, Her Grace Sarvakanti Mataji had offered Srila Gurudeva his
lunch. Mataji also had His Holiness Sridhar Maharaja’s picture on the
Vyasasana. We offered Pushpanjali and Guru Puja to Srila Gurudeva and
Sridhar Maharaja. We sang Saparsada-bhagavad-viraha-janita-vilapa (Je
Anilo…) and Sri Nrsimha pranam, and then served the feast.
During Prasadam, we
showed the dvd of Srila Gurudeva’s Memories with Srila Prabhupada.
Afterwards, we sang for
Shivani’s birthday, and concluded the programme on that light note.
